Our foundation herd of heritage breed, Galloway cattle produce superior beef on pasture forage.  Low in fat, tender and full of flavor, it is the ultimate in grass fed beef. The USDA Cycle IV Germ Plasm Evaluation Program at the Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) showed that Galloways placed at the top of the chart for flavor, juiciness and tenderness when compared to eleven other breeds.

Riven Rock Galloways are raised humanely and in an environment that is free of agrichemicals, pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. They feed on lush green mountain meadows, and are completely hormone, anti-biotic and grain- free, resulting in an all natural grass fed beef product that is exceptionally tender, healthy and full of flavor- Virginia's best!


Our cattle are pasture raised using organic practices and fed organic supplements and minerals.  We rotationally graze our cattle and in winter, feed on pure Highland hay.  This hay is grown here locally and includes orchardgrass, bluegrass, rye, timothy, clover, alfalfa, and other assorted grasses and forbs. 

Their year-round, free-choice mineral supplement is a certified organic mix of Thorvin Sea Kelp and trace minerals.

We are an Animal Welfare Approved farm and strive to provide an exceptional environment for our animals.  Following AWA guidelines, we only use an antibiotic in a life or death situation with an animal.  We never use any medications as a preventative.

Why 100% Natural and not Certified Organic?

We choose not to be organically certified for several reasons:

We sometimes source high quality hay from some of our neighbors, who cant afford- or justify the certification process.

“Certified Organic” has become big business and a profit center for the federal government.  We choose not to support that. 

It is an expensive, tedious process that only increases the prices we would have to charge for our beef.

We would rather open our farm to all of our customers and let you see for yourself- our animals, our humane, organic practices, and our commitment to providing a wonderful, healthy product.  We brag that we had over 50 inspectors visit Riven Rock last year. We call those inspectors- customers!

At Riven Rock, our goal is to create a truly Holistic grazing system. By rotating our animals to fresh grass daily, the animal impact works in harmony with nature and promotes fertility, microbial activity and healthy topsoil.  The livestock actually heal the land.  

Not only do we not use hormones, preventative antibiotics, or steroids; we keep our cattle on pastures 365 days of the year, not in distant feedlots- and we never feed grain.  This is not a requirement by organic standards, but we believe in nurturing our animals and raising them the way nature intended.

Heritage Galloway Beef Half $4.50 Per Pound. Based on Pre-cut hanging weight.

Our Beeves are usually ready for processing at 1,000 to 1,100 pounds. An 1,100 pound steer results in an approximate pre-cut hanging weight of 650 pounds.  50% of 650 pounds would be about 325 pounds pre-cut hanging weight.  This will yield between 200-220 pounds of packaged cuts per beef half

Our local custom/USDA processor- Alleghany Meats-  will custom cut, wrap and flash freeze your balanced quarter beef share to your specifications.  They have several excellent packaging and cuts options for you to choose from.  You pick your options, and pay Alleghany Meats directly the the processing of your beef share.

There is a $300.00 down payment required to reserve your half/whole beef. The balance is due at time of pick up at Alleghany Meats.  We will communicate with each customer and let you know when the dry aging and cutting are done, and then you may call Alleghany Meats to arrange a pick up time at the center here in Highland County.

For 1/2 of a beef you would need approximately 6 cubic feet of freezer space.
